Because I'm An Idiot Sometimes

Shannon and I took a break yesterday and treated ourselves to a matinee. We saw Hairspray and oh my word was it hysterical. If you haven't seen it, then you're living under a rock because we were absolutely the last people in the nation to see it. Unless you haven't. And then you're the loser and not us.

Where was I? Oh yes, insulting my readers. Sorry. Add it to the list. You know, the list about what an idiot I am.

Shannon:
Zac Effron is in this and I can't wait to see how he does. (Aside: Zac Effron, for you rock-dwellers, is Troy from High School Musical 1 & 2. If you don't know what HSM is, then you're out of my reach. And lucky, because that means you're not caught up in the Troy/Gabriella saga and the fact that they're an item in real-life too and OMG did they break up or was it just a rumor? And what do the promise rings mean? Yes. I'm a sad little woman.)
Me: No he's not. He's in the Broadway version, not the movie.
Shannon: No, I think he's in this one.
Me: Hmmm. (As is in, No he's not, but I won't argue because I'm nice like that.)

Zac Effron appears larger than life and in all his glory.

Shannon: There! See? That's Zac Effron.
Me: Are you sure? I really don't think it's him. (Oh, it's him all right. Dammit.)
Shannon: I really think it's him.
Me: Hmmm. (As in, Dammit.)

Shannon (watching the credits): Oh! It was a movie in the 80s, then a Broadway show, and now a re-made movie.
Me: Are you sure? I really think it was on Broadway first.
Shannon: It was just right there on the credits.
Me: Hmmm. (As in, Damn. IT!)

Me (on the way home): So, Zac Effron was in the movie. That probably means he's NOT in the Broadway show, huh?
Shannon: No, I don't think so. (Y'all, I just wish you could see how incredibly Southern Shannon is. She can tell you you're an idiot you're wrong about something she knew she was right about and make it seem like a compliment. I love that.)

Shannon: John Travolta was funny, but I thought it was distracting to have him play a woman. It would have been better if they'd just had a woman as the mom.
Me: It was originally written for a man to play the mom.
Shannon: Really?
Me: How the hell do I know? I haven't been right all day.

Well, I guess I will take your place under the rock. Never seen Hairspray. But now I know what to see the next time I go to the movies! :-)

OK, put the big L on my forehead! I want to see this movie so bad!! I'm glad to hear it's good.

We watched "So you think you can dance" this summer (Yeah, people are going to mistake me for the La Leche League mascot soon) Anyway, they had the choreographer on and he was so great!

After the first sentence, I was thinking, "Y'all adopted a MANITEE?! Like from a Florida wildlife preserve? So very green!" Yeah, I'm pretty bright.

Did you know John Travolta was their second choice? Yeah, originally they wanted Ralph Nader.

We went to see Hairspray yesterday too....but for the SECOND time! :) Yes, we loved it *that* much!

Here's a little fact for you to impress Shannon with....
One of the talent agents that comes to the Miss Teenage Hairspray competition near the end of the movie.....it was Ricki Lake. She played Tracy Turnblad on Broadway. :)

Great movie. One we'll own when it comes onto DVD for sure.

Whoa....wait a sec (Dammit) I meant the original FILM of Hairspray. (sigh)

Sheesh!

Well, slap my forehead and call me a loser - I haven't seen it yet. Glad you enjoyed it...and isn't it good to have friends that love you even when you've spend most of the day filling out the ID-10-T form?

That was the funniest dialog you've ever written! Your sarcastic voice has really come into its own and I predict your readership will be increasing by leaps and bounds over the next few months... (waiving hands over a crystal ball)

Jeana knows this because she is my assistant and the Ralph Nader Archival Library.

Ha! Love it when some of my favorite stars from other blogs make cameo appearances in a different favorite blog.

I saw it on broadway in March during my girls weekend. It was fantastic. Ashley Parker Angel played the part of Link.

I also saw the movie and just loved it.

I love how you told that story and made me look very smart and informed, instead of the blubbering mess I was looking at Zac Efron on the big screen.

"I'm a loser baby..so why don't you kill me?"

Am I less loser-ish if I plan on seeing it but haven't had the money or time?

I feel like a cradle robber, but I have a crush on Zac Efron. He's dreamy.

Joy oh joy! For once, I'm not the one under the rock... Mr. Right and I saw Hairspray the day after it came out. Woo Hoo. (Free tickets - it's the only way we weren't smashed under that rock.)

But really, I can't lie. We're still there. We haven't seen the HSM 2 because of the no cable thing... But we've heard lots and lots of good things about it. Does that count?

And Shannon: The part of the mother was originally written for a man. (There Chili, you're finally really right about something!)

I loved John Travolta's part - couldn't envision anyone else doing it any better!

I'm the loser you to which you are referring. Haven't seen it yet, but at least I knew who Zac Efron is!

I didn't even bother seeing the new version because the Jon Waters version is so perfect. You MUST rent it. I swear, it is one of the all time great movies from the Jon Waters collection. Mrs Turnblad was originally written for Devine, who was a transvestite. Other actors in the film included Debbie Harry, Sonny Bono, Ric Okasik, Pia Zadora, and Rikki Lake. It is a real classic and there is no way the remake with John Revolting could even begin to stand up to the original.

Rent it!

This hit home so well! I have 3 teenagers in the house and can't count how many times I've had similar conversations! Do you mind if I link to this post from my blog?

For future reference, Zac is going to be in a remake of one of the best dance movies ever-FOOTLOOSE! I can't wait to see that!

I envy you. I really, really wanted to take my son to Hairspray. I knew he'd love the music. But no, he insisted on the Simpsons movie. Oh, he owes me....

I am so horribly offended.

P.S. I haven't seen it, and ::ducking:: I hated High School Musical! I just don't get it. Brad Pitt. I get that. Heeeello.
